How Illinois Computes helped Grace Tan
Integrated Biology graduate student Grace Tan’s biology application stopped working after an upgrade to the computing resource it was running on. Suspecting that the system software now required newer versions of her application software, an Illinois Computes staff member developed what is called a container to get Tan back up and running.
A container is an encapsulated run environment, which uses a different set of operating system software while relying on the computer’s general operating system for some functions. That meant Tan didn’t have to change platforms or rework her code. Instead, she could continue to rely on existing versions of CUDA, tensorflow, Python, and other software that were already working reliably for her particular needs.
