Nightingale is designed for working with regulated data and is currently compliant with:
- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) for Protected Health Information (PHI)
- Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 1 for Controlled Unclassified Information(CUI)
- Level 2 compliance targeted by the end of 2026
Additional information about Nightingale:
- Undergoes annual audits by external entities to maintain secure operations, historically SOC 2 Type 2, with NIST 800-171 intending to be done going forward. Projects not requiring this level of security are best served by other resources.
- Runs Linux and provides both interactive computing sessions and traditional high-performance computing. GPUs are available for both.
- Storage for active data is available.
- A managed database service is available.
Jade is a tape storage system associated with Nightingale that provides an option for lower-cost long-term retention of regulated data.

Illinois Computes originally intended to cover only up to $2,500 in expenses per researcher, but has ended up averaging significantly more. A review is currently underway to determine a new limit that better balances the intent of Illinois Computes with the needs of researchers. This will almost certainly be a number higher than $2,500 but not as high as some researchers have utilized to date. Please contact Illinois Computes to discuss your needs in detail.
